Pack in a 3-to-4-inch base of crushed rock aggregate (such as ¾-inch road base or decomposed granite). Lightly mist the stone base with water. Run a commercial vibratory plate compactor over the area in overlapping passes until the base reaches a minimum 95% compaction rate and is perfectly firm to walk on. Apply a thin ¼-inch leveling layer of finer stone dust or limestone screenings over the top to eliminate any micro-ridges or sharp edges.
