Dig out and remove existing sod, weeds, and root systems to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Grade the underlying native soil at a minimum 0.5% slope toward your chosen drainage route or collector trenches. Roll out a heavy-duty geotextile weed fabric across the entire exposed soil floor to block weed growth while preserving water drainage. Add a 2 to 3-inch layer of crushed stone or Class 2 road base (typically ¾-inch minus aggregate). Mist the aggregate with water and pack it down using a vibrating plate compactor. Apply a final ½ to 1-inch leveling layer of fine aggregate (such as crushed granite dust or sharp sand). Screed the top layer perfectly smooth and compact it a final time to create a rock-hard, unyielding foundation.
