Excavate existing sod and topsoil to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Treat the bare earth with a commercial geotextile weed barrier to prevent subsurface growth. Backfill with a 3-inch layer of ¾-inch crushed drain stone (or road base). Wet and compact using a vibrating plate compactor to a 95% density. Apply a ½-inch layer of fine aggregate stone dust or rock screenings. Use a flat trowel or rake to level out all minor dips, then run the plate compactor a final time to achieve a concrete-smooth finish. Secure a 2x4 pressure-treated timber border or composite bender board along the yard's edges, setting it exactly 1.5 inches below the surrounding hardscape level.
