Dig out all existing natural grass, roots, and debris using a sod cutter or shovel to a uniform depth of 3 to 4 inches below the finished perimeter border. Smooth out the native dirt subgrade, shaping a subtle 0.5% slope toward a designated drainage exit point or collector trench to prevent subsurface water pooling.
