Excavate the installation zone to a uniform depth of 3.5 to 4 inches to accommodate the thick backing and sub-base material. Lay down a heavy-duty commercial weed barrier fabric. Overlap the seams by 6 inches and pin them securely to the dirt. Infill the excavated area with 3 inches of Decomposed Granite (DG) or 3/8-inch minus crushed limestone. Lightly mist the aggregate with water, then run a motorized vibratory plate compactor over the area. The sub-base must reach a 90% compaction density to prevent uneven dips over time.
