It works on the exact biological principle of sweating. When exposed to moisture—from rain, morning dew, or a quick hosing—the infill granules absorb and lock water inside. As solar radiation heats the grass, the stored moisture slowly evaporates, carrying thermal energy away from the surface. Unlike a standard water rinse on ordinary sand, which dries up in minutes, HydroChill is a slow-release mechanism. A single brief hydration cycle can provide sustainable, active temperature reduction for two to three days depending on local humidity and wind speed. Most variations feature integrated Bac-Shield™ antimicrobial technology. This additive actively inhibits the growth of bacteria, microbes, mold, and mildew. HydroChill Infill (developed by Shaw Industries) is a specialized, evaporative cooling infill consisting of a synthetic liquid coating pre-applied to a premium silica sand matrix. It operates on the principle of thermal bio-regulation—similar to human sweating—by trapping moisture from rainfall, dew, or brief manual watering and slowly releasing it via evaporation to drastically lower high surface temperatures. Ensure the artificial turf fibers and backing are 100% dry before beginning the application process. Working on wet grass will cause the fine sand granules to clump prematurely near the top of the blades. Run a mechanical power broom or a stiff-bristled turf rake across the entire project area moving strictly against the yarn grain. This step opens up the synthetic thatch and pulls the blades fully upright to accept the infill matrix. Fill a standard commercial drop spreader with the HydroChill media. Utilise a drop spreader exclusively for this process; avoid centrifugal rotary spreaders, which fling the coated granules unevenly and create alternating dense spots.
